By Strengthening Self-Worth

By: Michell Stanley, LICSW, ACC, RYT

Impostor Syndrome is a self-devaluation process that compels you to overachieve in anticipation of failure. It leads to overworking and burnout in the pursuit of approval or validation from others, while simultaneously making it difficult to accurately assess your own value.

Feeling inadequate can result in a perpetual state of striving, stress, and imbalance. Therefore, the solution to impostor syndrome lies not in overworking, but in strengthening your self-worth.

Strengthening self-worth is the key to trusting in yourself. It is a deeply rooted state of being that relies more on internal belief than external validation. Self-worth allows you to not only trust in your abilities but also think positively of yourself in relation to others. Keep reading to discover the essence of self-worth and practical strategies to cultivate it.

1. Validate Your Feelings Instead of Seeking External Validation

Self-worth involves embracing your strengths, weaknesses, and unique qualities without seeking validation from others. When you find yourself wondering what someone else thinks of you, ask yourself what you “truly think and feel?” about yourself first.

2. Stop Judging and “Shoulding” on Yourself

To stand in self-worth, we must first embrace what is true. The next time you catch yourself criticizing your choices, try to observe the situation objectively and just recognize what it is at face-value without adding interpretation of meaning.

3. Change the Tone of Your Self-Talk

Negative self-talk can be a significant barrier to self-worth. Shift your perspective by speaking to yourself with the same kindness and encouragement you would offer to a loved one or a child.

4. Start with Self-Care

Self-worth is closely intertwined with self-care and well-being. Make time in your day for self-care practices such as eating healthy meals, exercising, self-reflection, and socialization. Prioritizing self-care strengthens your self-worth and creates a positive ripple effect in all areas of your life.

5. Bring Confidence into Relationships and Career

Your sense of self-worth has a profound impact on our relationships and careers. Practicing assertive, simple, and clear communication skills fosters healthier connections and empowers you to set boundaries that allow you to feel seen, supported, and thrive.

Most importantly, remember that self worth is not about pretending to be someone you aren’t. It is a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and self-belief. By embracing your true self, overcoming self-doubt, and nurturing your well-being, you can strengthen self-worth from within.
